Yavapai College Teaching Requirements

Yavapai College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (NCA). In order to maintain accreditation, the NCA requires that we document the credentials of our faculty.

The State of Arizona no longer requires a certificate to teach at the community college level. The State, however, has requested that each county establish its own minimum qualifications.

All faculty (full-time and adjunct) holding an Arizona Community College teaching certificate issued prior to July 1, 2002, shall be considered as having met the minimum standards for teaching in the field(s) for which the certificate was issued during the time the certificate would have been valid

All new faculty and current faculty members whose certificates have expired must be reviewed for classification utilizing Yavapai College employment standards.

Degrees and courses qualifying for these standards are to be from an accredited U.S. college or university. Foreign college degrees and course work must be submitted by the applicant to an approved foreign credential evaluation agency for translation for certification. Click on the attached link for the list of approved evaluation agencies.

All Yavapai College faculty members teaching academic transfer courses are expected to hold a graduate degree from an accredited college or university. An academic transfer course is defined as a course in subject areas where work toward the associate degree carries transfer credit toward higher degrees, i.e., liberal arts, business, technology, and an ever-growing number of other fields. Increasingly, any technical course has the potential to be transferable toward a higher degree.

Credentialing Requirements for Faculty Teaching Transferable Coursework:

  • Masters degree in the teaching field (preferred) -or-
  • 18 hours of graduate study in the discipline -or-
  • 24 hours of upper division and graduate study combined
    may be considered.

Credentialing Requirements for Faculty Teaching Non-Transferable Coursework:

  • The same qualifications as those listed above for transferable course work are preferred, or an Associate's Degree in the discipline with verified five (5) years recent occupational work experience may be considered for occupational programs only.

All faculty members must meet a Community College Teaching requirement in addition to the academic background requirement for their area.

A full-time faculty member is required to complete EDU 250, The Community College, within two years of hire.

An adjunct faculty member is required to complete EDU 150, Instruction, Assessment, and Management in the Classroom - four Yavapai College Adjunct Faculty Training Modules, within two years of hire. This course is available in three formats: in person, in Blackboard, and on CD.
